Spring Cleaning 101 - The Ultimate Guide for Getting Out with the Old and In with the New

by Maura

Spring has sprung, and especially with social distancing guidelines and restrictions, it is now the perfect time to start that spring cleaning you’ve been putting off, say since… 2010! I’ve spent way too much time watching “The Home Edit” on Netflix while also pretending that I’m Clea and Joanna every time I enter the Container Store, so I could basically be a professional organizer at this point. Let me give you my tips and tricks of what I do when I see that my apartment is in need of a revamp! Now, if only I could keep it this polished!

In my kitchen, I love keeping boxes together that resemble each other in size, shape, and color. It helps me better utilize my space by not letting any of it go to waste. Try putting cereal boxes all lined up together, pots and pans inside one another, and spices lined up by size. A rotating spice rack can help keep them all organized and in sight for when you need. Bonus points if you put everything in matching acrylic containers! If the Container Store is out of your price range, check your local Dollar Tree! I have found so many organizational containers from there. Pro tip: check the whole store. Sometimes you may find cute jars in the craft section that you can repurpose for your house!

If you’re anything like me, you’re a shopaholic living out of a city-apartment closet. In my case, closet optimization is a must! I like to keep everything together by category and then color-coordinate within the category, too. For example, I have all of my sweaters together in the backside of my closet since they are starting to rotate out of season. In the fall and winter, I will swap them out with my sundresses and airy blouses to bring them in the forefront more easily. I also keep things together by occasion; i.e., my work clothes are kept separate from my going out clothes. This way, when I am trying to decide what to wear, once I’m back working in person, of course, I can easily go to my work section to pick out a floral blouse or tailored blazer and won’t be distracted by my leather leggings begging to be worn.

XOXO,

Maura
